Reflexology 101

What to Expect from Your First Reflexology Session

By Siyabonga Blessing Nkosi, certified reflexologist · · 5 min read · Rustenburg & Gauteng

Booking your first foot reflexology session can feel like stepping into the unknown — will it hurt, how long does it take, do you need to prepare anything? Here's a straightforward walkthrough so you know exactly what to expect.

Before the Session

There's very little to prepare. Wear whatever is comfortable — reflexology only involves the feet and lower legs, so there's no need to undress. If we're coming to you mobile in Gauteng or you're visiting the Rustenburg studio, just have a clean, comfortable seat or bed available and around 50 minutes free. It helps to avoid a heavy meal right before your session, but it isn't essential.

Arrival & Consultation

Every session starts with a short chat about anything you'd like addressed — tired legs after standing all day, general stress, poor sleep, or simply wanting to relax. This isn't a medical consultation; it just helps guide where we spend a little extra time on the reflexology chart.

The Treatment Itself

Your feet are cleansed and settled into a warm soak first, often with rosemary or eucalyptus, before we begin targeted pressure-point work across the sole, arch, heel and toes. Pressure is firm but should never be sharply painful — speak up if anything feels too intense, and we'll adjust immediately. Most clients describe the sensation as a mix of deep relief and mild tenderness in specific spots, which usually eases within seconds.

What You'll Feel Afterwards

Many people feel noticeably lighter on their feet and more relaxed generally, sometimes with a pleasant heaviness or sleepiness for the rest of the day. Drinking water afterwards is a good habit, same as after any bodywork.

How Often Should You Book?

One session gives you a taste, but the real benefit of reflexology builds with consistency — many regulars book every two to four weeks. If you're curious whether reflexology or something with more pressure suits you better, our article on reflexology vs massage breaks down the difference.
